When you consider Bruce Cotterill’s resume it’s not difficult to understand why he describes his career as a ‘vertical learning curve’ Having launched his own computer company at the age of 22, Bruce went on to leadership roles in a European strategic consulting firm, an Australasian commercial real estate services company and a New Zealand based media group – all before the age of 40.
Through an unrelenting focus on the bottom line, Bruce has developed a reputation for outstanding performance, particularly in leading loss-making businesses into profitability. He is a highly regarded business communicator and, in his ‘spare’ time, he assists service organisations to maximise their profitability through focussing on what he calls the ‘7 Principles of Profit’.
He is currently Chairman of the Noel Leeming Group and a member of the advisory board of Gresham Private Equity in Australia. |

PETER BAINES As a Detective Inspector with the Forensic Services Group of the NSW Police, Peter has led teams investigating a range of horrendous crimes and disasters including the Bali bombings, the Boxing Day Tsunami and the Waterfall train disaster.
Through his work Peter has touched the lives of many and continues to do so by way of his compelling keynote presentations where he describes the lessons learned from managing crisis’s on the world stage.
Peter has degrees in forensic science and law and has completed postgraduate studies in management. |

JOE BENNETT
An Englishman by birth, Joe attended Cambridge University and then, for want of better ideas, taught English in Spain, France, Canada before coming to New Zealand in 1987.
Joe left the classroom in 1998 to become a newspaper columnist and today he has syndicated columns in various daily newspapers, appears on television as a raconteur and entertains audiences with his down to earth Kiwi humour. |

DOUGLAS RIDDLE
Doug is the global director of the Center for Creative Leadership, a non-profit educational institution dedicated to leadership education and research globally. He directs more than 375 professional coaches worldwide and has personally coached senior leaders in the public and private sectors throughout the world. Doug also spends time advising global organisations on the best ways to incorporate coaching into their leadership development and talent management processes. |

DAVID COLLINS
In his original practice David spent a significant amount of time making appearances before professional disciplinary tribunals, the Privy Council, Court of Appeal and High Court of New Zealand. He was appointed a Queen’s Counsel in 2000 and made Solicitor-General in 2006. David has also worked as Chairman of ACC, Chairman of the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal and been a member of the Board of Governors, World Association of Law and Medicine. |

SJ DAVIES
Known as S-J, Susan-Jane is the head of EMA Legal, managing legal teams for the central and northern divisions of the Employers and Manufacturers Association. Offering high level strategic legal advice to employers on change management and transactional issues, S-J is a tenacious and effective advocate. She has more than 20 years experience as a barrister and solicitor in private practice in New Zealand and England and has worked in-house for IBM (UK) and Lion Nathan in NZ. |

Paul East QC, CNZM, is a former Attorney-General and New Zealand High Commissioner to Britain. A company director and barrister, Paul also provides advice to Bell Gully on public law issues. |

BARRY FISHER
Barry is Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for SAP Canada Inc. He is also Chief Compliance officer and Chief Security officer, Executive sponsor for the IT department and serves on the SAP Canada Executive Leadership team. He has practised law in both the US and Canada and has held executive positions on a number of different counsels of the Canadian and American Bar Associations. |

DAVID FLACKS
David has in-depth experience of corporate and commercial law having worked both in-house as General Counsel and Company Secretary for Carter Holt Harvey and as a partner for Bell Gully. He has acted for major New Zealand companies on general corporate work, acquisitions and divestments and as lead partner on a number of public company listings. He advises on boardroom issues and directors’ duties and has acted for companies involved in friendly and hostile public company takeovers. David specialises in major corporate transactions and managing legal issues and projects across a range of jurisdictions. |

TONY HARTEVELT
Prior to becoming Deputy Secretary to Treasury Tony worked within the State Services Commission and as a partner with Pricewaterhouse Coopers. In his current role Tony is working across the three Central Agencies (Treasury, SSC and the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet) and his primary focus is on increasing the Central Agencies’ collective leverage on performance issues across the state sector, as well as ensuring internal co-ordination and prioritisation of issues of importance to the Central Agencies. |

Kim Harvey is CEO of Azion Holdings Ltd, a world-leading developer of innovative workplace wellness products. She is passionate about the energy and wellbeing of people and has been involved in the wellness industry for over 15 years. During this time she has been head choreographer of one of the Les Mills world-class aerobics programmes, lectured for AUT University in exercise science and physiology and started Azion in 2000 with the sole purpose of providing programmes that would motivate participants to do simple things every day to feel terrific! The wellness industry is the fastest growing industry sector worldwide, and after experiencing terrific success in New Zealand Azion is now distributing their products internationally. |

JOHN HOLLAND
John Holland was recently appointed a member of the Securities Commission for a five-year term commencing on 1 January 2007. He is a corporate and commercial law specialist with particular interest in securities. He has been a commercial partner in Chapman Tripp since the establishment of its Christchurch office in November 1997. Prior to that he was a commercial partner in another national law firm. His current practice involves advising many leading South Island corporates on corporate governance and securities law issues. He has previous governance experience as a board member of Chapman Tripp, and a director of Kathmandu Group Limited. |

DAVID KNIGHT
David Knight is the General Counsel, Retail & Corporate for Telecom New Zealand.
David Knight joined Telecom in June 1998. David is a specialist competition lawyer, providing support to other members of Telecom’s Legal Services Group and the business on competition law matters that arise across Telecom.
David also holds an honours degree in law and an arts degree from the University of Auckland. |

DAVID KREIDER
David is General Counsel for Vodafone NZ Ltd, having relocated to New Zealand from Hong Kong where he worked as Director of Corporation Finance for the Securities and Futures Commission and as General Counsel to China Mobile. Earlier roles involved senior positions with the New York Regional Office of the US Securities and Exchange Commission and work as a trial lawyer. David is a Fellow of the London, Hong Kong and New Zealand Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. |

Margarete is a strategy consultant with HP Business Consulting. She has extensive experience of transformational change in the private and public sector in New Zealand and has spent several years working in the European utilities and manufacturing sectors focussing on change management, process excellence and organisational alignment. |

JOHN MARSHALL
John is President-elect of the New Zealand Law Society and will assume the Presidency at the end of March 2007. As a barrister in Wellington his practice is centred on providing litigation and advisory services with an emphasis on mediation and arbitration. |

David was appointed General Counsel of Fonterra Co-operative Group Ltd in 2002. He has also held positions as Australian General Counsel for the Telecom NZ Group, Australasian Counsel for the Campbell Soup Group and General Counsel, Arnott’s Biscuits Ltd. Prior to these roles David worked in Corporate and Finance Law for international law firms in Sydney and London. |

PATRICK PILCHER
Pat has been researching and covering key technology issues, events and gadgets since the early 90’s. He has worked as the senior research manager for multinational IT research company IDC, providing market insights to New Zealand’s major IT companies. Currently employed by Telecom New Zealand as their corporate market intelligence specialist, Pat also writes for various tech magazines and the Dominion Post. |

NICOLAS SHORT
Nicolas has worked within the legal team of Carter Holt Harvey for the last 10 years and is currently General Counsel. Prior to joining Carter Holt he spent 5 years in Hong Kong with Baker & McKenzie where he focussed on aircraft financing and leasing. His earlier career was with Goodman & Goodman in Toronto and Bell Gully in Auckland. Nicolas is immediate past president of CLANZ and a member of the NZX Disciplinary and Regulatory panels. |

DUNCAN WEBB
As Professor at the School of Law, University of Canterbury, Duncan’s interests lie in ethics, commercial law and the legal system. He has published a number of books and written articles on various aspects of professional ethics and commercial law and is currently working with the NZLS to develop professional rules for lawyers in compliance with the provisions of the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2007. Duncan also practices law as a consultant with Lane Neave in Christchurch. |
