Parents Group series: a panel discussion on some of the key
issues facing working parents and ways to deal with them.

CLANZ president Helen Mackay will be joined by Toko Kapea from Tuia
Legal and Jane Meares from Treasury to share their own personal
experiences as working parents and to lead a wider group discussion.

Helen Mackay is General Counsel at NZ Oil & Gas and balances her job and
the CLANZ presidency with family commitments. She has two sons, aged
four and two.

Toko Kapea is father to three. A partner at Tuia Legal, he took extended
parental leave after the birth of his second child and now works a four
day week to spend more time with his family.

Jane Meares is Legal Manager at Treasury. Her career, which includes
previous roles with the Department of Internal Affairs and as a partner
at Bell Gully, is juggled with family life and three children.

2007 AMINZ Annual Dispute Resolution Conference, Auckland

The Annual Conference is fast-approaching  with an interesting and varied programme this year  for  everyone with an interest in alternative dispute resolution (ADR). Special Saturday only conference rates  and group concessions are available for those who are unable to take advantage of the full programme.

The  keynote speakers are Judith A. Saul from New York who is speaking on Honouring Party Choice: Mediation's Purpose  as well as delivering a workshop on Transformative Mediation, and The Hon Justice Hugh Williams  speaking on The Interface Between Courts and Dispute Resolution. 

For  people interested in mediation, there will be panel sessions on developments in public sector dispute resolution and the cultural and religious aspects of ADR.  Other sessions are on peer mediation in schools which has been instituted in more than 1,200 schools throughout New Zealand, and an exploration of mediator liability and duty of care in hybrid mediation/arbitration dispute resolution processes.

For  people interested in arbitration, sessions will include topics on a review of the provisions of the Arbitration Amendment Bill, How Arbitrators Get Paid, the AMINZ Court of Arbitration and Arbitration Appeal Tribunal, and Expert Witnessing.  There will also be an update on adjudication cases under the  Construction Contracts Act .

ACC 2006 Annual Meeting
23-25 October 2006

The 2006 Annual Meeting (conference) of the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) was held in San Diego from 23-25 October this year.  Over 2,700 delegates from 30 countries (but predominantly from the USA) were registered, making it the biggest annual gathering of in-house counsel in the world.

The Annual Meeting offered a comprehensive range of over 100 general sessions and a tailored chief legal officer (General Counsel) program over 2 1/2 days.  Attendees were able to select and attend 10 sessions during the Meeting, and the choice of sessions made it easy to tailor the Meeting to specific areas of interest.

Combined CLANZ/ ACLA presentation
The ACC has a small but growing interest in international legal issues.  Through its association with CLANZ and the Australian Corporate Lawyers Association (ACLA), this growing interest is demonstrated by an ongoing invitation to CLANZ and ACLA to present to the Meeting on a topic of international interest to US based in-house lawyers.  This year’s topic was “International Anti-Money Laundering”, and the three speakers were Ross Freeman, a partner from Minter Ellison’s Melbourne office, Bill Brown, Group General Manager Legal & Regulatory, Tabcorp Holdings Ltd, and myself.

Ross presented generally on AML in the international environment, noting that reforms in Australia and other countries in the region are based on the principles set out in the recommendations of the Financial Action Task Force.  Bill presented on the Australian law reform process in AML and his experience as an in-house lawyer in that process.  I presented specifically on NZ and referred to my experience in the AML space arising from this year’s cross border acquisition of Italian cookware company, Elba SpA, by Fisher & Paykel Appliances Limited.

General sessions
Most of the over 100 sessions on offer concerned US specific legal issues.  However, in every time slot there was a session concerning general issues relevant to any in-house legal department.  These sessions covered issues such as performance management, care and feeding of the board, and applying management techniques to the law department.

The quality of speakers was generally very high, with many leading US General Counsel speaking.  I participated in a number of the tailored chief legal officer (General Counsel) sessions, which were run as facilitated round table discussions.  It was useful to hear the views of other chief legal officers on very practical topics such as measuring team performance.

Networking
The ACLA and CLANZ representation was well received, with representatives invited to a number of networking events including to a special dinner for the international contingent on the last evening of the Meeting.  Numerous other networking opportunities were available.

Overall, this was a well run and impressive conference.  For those considering attending in future I would recommend that you team up with the representatives from CLANZ and ACLA who will help guide you through the crowds and ensure you make the most of this event.
